Morning Mike.....when we were in Hawaii several years ago, we couldn't get to the black sand beaches because of lava flowing.  Somehow I thought the sand would be much darker though.

Mike and Sheryl - On my first trip to the Big Island, I was stunned to see the black sand at Kalapana.  That was back in the mid 1970s.  The whole area is changed now due to lava flow.

Hi there Mike! Lovely photo, restive and peaceful feeling. Are the places where the sand is, or looks to be, all black?

Have a great Sunday!

I just saw a travel channel show about a black sand beach in Hawaii....we are going to hopefully be out there next year for a family reunion (my husband is Hawaiian)

My brother visited Hawaii several years ago and brought back a soda bottle with black sand in it.  I always thought it would be darker than it really is.

Mike and Sheryl,

Black sand is a real unusual part of your landscape that not a lot of people can claim. :)

We have a black sand beach here, too, but no one seems to know where the black sand comes from. I bet the Pineapple Express ocean currents bring it in from Hawaii.
