Mike and Sheryl - I had friends that lived on the Big Island. They told me stories of how the ground could look like that right after a fairly recent lava flow; but were able to chisel a few holes out, plop in a payapa seed and have fruit in no time at all.  Barren in Hawaii isn't like barren in other places:-)

Mike & Sheryl --- is this really a shot taken in Hawaii?  I would not have thought so.

Mike and Sheryl,

Barren for now but we know how it can turn into a lush garden spot. :)

This is a photo of the lava field created by the last eruption of Mt. Haleakala, thought to have been around 1790. Very little vegetation has returned to the areas where the lava remains undisturbed, but if you look at my header above you can see what it looks like just a couple of miles down the road. You don't have to travel far on Maui for a significant change in scenery. Thanks for stopping by to have a look!

It's only barren temporarily. Mother and Father Nature are already at work to spruce it up for future generations.
