Lifeguards Have Returned to Makena!

Maui County ocean safety officers are now staffing two new lifeguard towers at the very popular and often-treacherous Makena Beach (Big Beach). Known for its dangerous shorebreaks and strong rip currents, the beach has previously been unguarded for the past 15 years.

The towers are located at both ends of the park and the lifeguards, who are directly linked to the county's 911 emergency response system, will be on duty seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Come visit, be safe and enjoy!

Lifeguard services are some of those that are being cut here due to the budget deficits. I've always wondered why lifeguards, police, and fire fighters are the first essential services to be cut. I say let's cut some politicians with their astronomical salaries and perks.

Jim - Cut the politicians...now I agree with that!! I'm not sure where this money is coming from since these are county lifeguards working in a state park, but many unsuspecting visitors have been hurt here over the years and this should make it a lot more user friendly. Thanks for stopping by. - Mike

Knowing that your Makena Beach, Big Beach, is guarded and protected by your county lifeguards is a welcoming tribute to your ocean Safety Department. Taking precautions and preventive measures  is always better than having casualties.

Kathleen- I agree. I appreciate that they are looking out for our unsuspecting visitors. Thanks for stopping by. - Mike

I typically don't go into the water at beaches unless there are lifeguards present. I know how to swim -- well -- but you just never know what might happen when you can't see what's in the water with you.

Russel - Our water is usually pretty clear, but I'm with you...if I can't see what's out there then I'm on the beach!
